GLOBAL ISSUES: REDEFINED
In response to the question, "What global issue irritates you the most, and why?", a few of our resident artists created artwork and detailed curatorial statements, embodying the need for change and virtuART's vision collectively.
The Truths of Social Media
Artificial realism is the realistic portrayal of that which is artificial. Today, we live in a very artificial world. Everything shown to us from the media is a collection of alternative facts in order to promote consumerism. Social media and the news are created by people of power as a tool to commercialize despite how many facts are hidden as a result. The news can never agree with one fact, there are many sources that contradict each other. For example, is almond milk ethical to drink? One source will say yes, it’s lactose-free, it has low-calories and produces less greenhouse gases than dairy milk. Another source will say no, almond milk plays a large role in the deforestation of Amazon rainforests. We don’t know what to believe, even if those facts are true and if the source is liable. We would have to do an intense in-depth research just to learn about something as simple as almond milk. That goes into my first piece, I Don’t Care (necklace 2020), a necklace that represents how we can live in a messed up society, as long as our individual ethical judgement is not risked. She is holding up the middle finger to show that there is no real answer and we’re stuck in the grey zone. So, who cares, don’t let society tell you what is right for you.My second piece, Man Made (stud earrings with dangles 2020), shows what is the reality of artificiality. We are told that artificial things are good, but it’s actual mania. Things that are created by man in an unrealistic way cause havoc and insecurity to the things that are real. We can't possibly fit the expectations of something that only exists only on screen. My second piece, Man Made (stud earrings with dangles 2020), shows what is the reality of artificiality.
